This iiLab project came about when a couple whose garden we designed and had been maintaining for several years asked if we might be able to build a Japanese soaking tub (called an Ofuro we came to learn) at the edge of the woods on their property.
A traditional ofuro is often constructed of hinoke or cedar wood and heated by wood-burning stove, but our clients were wanted to be able to get into their soaking tub quickly and in all kinds of weather. With that mandate in mind, our designers, stone masons and carpenters worked together to develop a concrete-insulated tub that retained the feel of a traditional Japanese ofuro, but could sit in the woods in chilly weather without losing too much heat by using an efficient electric heater. Winter-ready soaking tub, done!
We can now design and customize these tubs to fit your needs, from the traditional circle to other shapes, carefully considering the perfect spot for it in your landscape as well as practical issues such as utilities and adjacencies. An ofuro tub is typically 4’ deep and about 7’ in diameter, but can be smaller or larger. Using an electric heater and pump allows the motor to run quietly and water temps to reach 104 degrees, while subtracting the need for large equipment, but gas and wood-burning are also options. The spa walls are approximately 10” thick and filled with concrete allowing the ofuro to be used in colder months. It can be free standing or completely submerged in the ground, depending on site conditions. Lighting, sound systems, WiFi can all be integrated as well. Regular and custom covers are ordered to fit a variety of needs and aesthetics. Please reach out if an ofuro would be a welcome addition to your home!
