I have had the opportunity to work with and supervise Matthew Benzie and have no reservations attesting to his quality of character and ability to work within limitations while achieving exemplary results.
I have collaborated with Mr. Benzie on numerous projects at Paris Mountain State Park. He came to the park with a much-needed skill set as a Landscape Architect. Since his arrival he has undertaken the creation of a Historic Landscape Management Plan, site design for improved visitor signage, creation of visually engaging designs for a memorial tree garden, native plant garden, and watershed exhibit design. In addition to those projects, Mr. Benzie found creative methods to achieve a summer concert series that will evolve into a unique opportunity to blend the enjoyment of live music with greenspace/environmental messages. I was especially impressed with Mr. Benzie’s quick understanding of the financial limitations of a state agency and even more impressed with his abilities to adapt to those constraints, requirements, timelines, procurement guidelines, etc which resulted in my realization that Mr. Benzie could get the job done with limited supervision.
As a Landscape Architect, Matthew Benzie, already possessed the ability to present information in an attractive visual format, what I found impressive was his ability to take the spoken and written word and transform them into an accurate visual representation. Mr. Benzie’s spatial understanding frequently contributed towards the improvement of concepts that I had merely expressed in conversations. Mr. Benzie has also demonstrated that his written word is as engaging as his drawings.
In addition to his professional abilities, Matthew Benzie has a focused personal desire to play a significant role in the creation of sustainable communities that get people entwined with the natural environment while at the same time “turning on the light bulbs” in people’s minds as to their individual impact on the community in which they live.
Matthew Benzie will excel when given the opportunity, thus making only positive impacts on the environment in which he inhabits. My personal desire is that we as the community of Greenville County are able to find a way to keep Matthew Benzie’s professional and personal skills in the Upstate.
