Matt Benzie has added a patio to our side yard which is very unique and beautiful! We love it and enjoy spending time on it in the warm weather. He is also an arborist and does a great job trimming our trees so they stay healthy! Matt is very professional and is a pleasure to work with. He is extremely personable and he also brings his very friendly lab, Shadow, which is a treat for us! We truly recommend Matt for your landscaping and tree projects!

I have worked with Matt on several landscaping projects and it has truly been a pleasure. Matt has that rare combination of technical expertise, aesthetics and professionalism that is all too uncommon in this industry. And if all that weren’t enough, he is simply an all-round nice guy and very easy to work with! I value his judgment and count on his recommendations to improve the health and looks of our property. Honestly I cannot imagine working with anyone else. I recommend him highly.
I highly recommend Indigenous Ingenuities. Matt listened to my concerns and hopes for our front yard and walkway. He offered ideas that were outside of the box and coincided with our lifestyle and budget. Matt’s communication was outstanding during the whole process. We had time frames that needed to be met and he worked extra hard to complete the project with time to spare. Matt truly enjoys what he does, has a passion for creative landscape design, and was a joy to work with.
I have used Matthew Benzie with Indigenous Ingenuities over the last five years. His landscape design was used on my past renovation, a re-purposed textile mill called Cotton Mill Place. A recent design at Lofts by the Lake, another textile mill, addressed storm water run-off, private and public space design, plant planning and illustrative renderings for marketing purposes. Matthew brings a much needed function to my projects by understanding the multi-faceted needs of high-density housing projects and creating solutions through thoughtful landscape master plans. One of the many things I like about working with Indigenous Ingenuities is the direct contact I have with Matthew Benzie, the principal designer and owner of the company. He is a pleasure to work with and we will continue to use Indigenous Ingenuities on future projects.
Lofts by the Lake
After meeting with several landscape companies to replace a deteriorating row of privacy shrubs/trees, we met with Indigenous Ingenuities through a friend’s recommendation and hired them on the spot. Their creative vision and commitment to native varieties of plants truly set them apart from the competition, thus the advantage of being landscape architects. Being so pleased with the results of that project, we have since been working with Ind-Ing on an overall master plan for our entire property, to be completed in phases coinciding with exterior renovations.
Matt Benzie from Indigenous-Ingenuities transformed my overgrown back yard. I like his work because he does not use chemicals or dyed mulch and encourages the use of native plants. He trimmed my trees and bushes beautifully; in fact, the best thing about Matt is that he has an artistic eye.
Matt Benzie at Indigenous Ingenuities created and completed a gorgeous flagstone design for my front patio. He worked diligently to complete the project and overcame all obstructions that happened to have popped up. Matt understood that I did not want to waste some of the old brick from my original patio and found some clever ways to incorporate the brick into my new patio design. He also provided me with ideas of what to plant around the area and additional work I could do (or hire him) to bring the front yard and patio together with a consistent flow of structure and vegetation. I like to do work for myself around the house, but would hire Matt back anytime for his expertise and creativity.
Matthew Benzie was an outstanding graduate of landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst whom I have known for the past six years. I have had the good fortune to have Mr. Benzie in two of my planning\design studios and also in a research and writing class. I have only the highest recommendation for Matthew.
In the Landscape Design Studio, Space and Place, Matthew developed a fine series of five scale landscape models that explored the nature of landform, plants, and structures as the media that defines landscape space as a place for human activities. In an advanced landscape planning and design studio, Housing and Open Space, Matthew was the leader of an excellent team that planned a multi family residential community and open space system in Amherst, Massachusetts. The project engaged issues of public and private space, zoning and subdivision regulations, advances in planned unit multi family development, and the conservation of significant open space. Matthew demonstrated excellence in his planning and design ability with a keen sensitivity to the physical and cultural environment. He has fine graphic ability demonstrated in his design and planning proposals and in technical development of landscape projects.
Matthew Benzie has demonstrated his library and field research ability in my Environmental Design course that explored theory and practice in the 20th Century. He produced four demanding research papers and two excellent seminar presentations on spatial theory and specific works in planning, landscape architecture (including conservation and development issues linked to greenway planning), architecture, and environmental design.
Mr. Benzie continues to develop his analytic, planning, design ability, and skills. Matthew continues to demonstrate his professional understanding and advancing the environmental issues to serve human needs, wants, within an ecological responsibility.
Matthew, an outdoorsman and modest, is a great team player. He deals with complex planning and design concerns that address conservation and development issues. Matt will be a creative force. I give the highest recommendation for Matthew Benzie.

I have had the opportunity to work with and supervise Matthew Benzie and have no reservations attesting to his quality of character and ability to work within limitations while achieving exemplary results.
I have collaborated with Mr. Benzie on numerous projects at Paris Mountain State Park. He came to the park with a much-needed skill set as a Landscape Architect. Since his arrival he has undertaken the creation of a Historic Landscape Management Plan, site design for improved visitor signage, creation of visually engaging designs for a memorial tree garden, native plant garden, and watershed exhibit design. In addition to those projects, Mr. Benzie found creative methods to achieve a summer concert series that will evolve into a unique opportunity to blend the enjoyment of live music with greenspace/environmental messages. I was especially impressed with Mr. Benzie’s quick understanding of the financial limitations of a state agency and even more impressed with his abilities to adapt to those constraints, requirements, timelines, procurement guidelines, etc which resulted in my realization that Mr. Benzie could get the job done with limited supervision.
As a Landscape Architect, Matthew Benzie, already possessed the ability to present information in an attractive visual format, what I found impressive was his ability to take the spoken and written word and transform them into an accurate visual representation. Mr. Benzie’s spatial understanding frequently contributed towards the improvement of concepts that I had merely expressed in conversations. Mr. Benzie has also demonstrated that his written word is as engaging as his drawings.
In addition to his professional abilities, Matthew Benzie has a focused personal desire to play a significant role in the creation of sustainable communities that get people entwined with the natural environment while at the same time “turning on the light bulbs” in people’s minds as to their individual impact on the community in which they live.
Matthew Benzie will excel when given the opportunity, thus making only positive impacts on the environment in which he inhabits. My personal desire is that we as the community of Greenville County are able to find a way to keep Matthew Benzie’s professional and personal skills in the Upstate.
Director of Greenways, Greenville County Recreation District
I have had the privilege to see Matt grow as designer and artisan. He has an eye for detail that goes past the normal view, upon introspection to look at the big picture. I enjoy his ideas and hard work. He looks into the design and works to achieve a high standard of quality in this outdoor craft. We have built some beautiful gardens and amazing outdoor spaces together. I always look forward to Matt’s input on designs and projects. He thinks ahead and around projects and obstacles. He is always open-minded to new ideas and different ways of looking at an otherwise normal environment in order to create something truly unique and natural. Matt has passion for good design, our environment and life. I look forward to seeing and hearing about the ways he will change the world that surrounds us all.
